An (unfinished) Customer Review of On-Rev Web Hosting
Another day, another On-Rev web server is down... |
I am writing this in the hopes that:
- Someone (anyone) from On-Rev sees it;
- He or she thinks their potential customers will see it and that those customers will choose not to use On-Rev as a web host;
- That person makes changes at On-Rev.
My Experience:
+ The Good:
- Friendly customer support personnel
- Low reliability (frequent downtime)
- Poor communication with customers during and after downtime
- Insecure (no HTTPS) on support contact form
- No phone number on their website
My Recommendations to On-Rev:
- Be proactive in server maintenance.
- Be transparent in communication with customers about downtime.
- Refrain from using On-Rev as a web host, unless they agree to credit your account for any downtime your web site undergoes due to server issues.
- Refrain from engaging in a contract with On-Rev, any longer than month-to-month.
- Once hosting a website on On-Rev, back-up your website often. On-Rev servers go offline without notice to customers.
- Be comfortable deploying the local back-up of your site to another web host at a moment's notice, as On-Rev downtime often lasts for more than 24 hours.
I'll update this post when I am motivated to. As my On-Rev-hosted website continues to be down, I was just motivated enough to get this brief review out there (i.e. this post).
No web host is perfect. However, I have hosted sites with several shared hosts and On-Rev have been least happy with my experience with On-Rev (not including the friendliness of their support representatives).
Note: I do not claim shared hosting is appropriate for all applications. I host several sites on virtual private servers as well. I am posting this about sites I host on On-Rev.
