Opting out of Microsoft Active Protection Service (MAPS) in Microsoft Security Essentials

While I was installing the Microsoft Security Essential Upgrade, the Software License Terms (SLT) window appeared.  While I was reading the Microsoft Active Protection Service (MAPS) Participation section of the SLT, I learned Microsoft will be opting-in users by default.

Here's an article on Microsoft's TechNet website of which the author explains what MAPS is: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff823790.aspx

Here is what I did to opt-out of MAPS participation:
  1. Open the Microsoft Security Essentials window.
  2. Click the Settings tab near the top of the window.
  3. Click the "MAPS" category in the menu on the left.
  4. Click the "I don't want to join MAPS" radio button in the content area on the right.
  5. Click the "Save changes" button near the bottom of the window.
  6. I'm done. Close the Microsoft Security Essentials window.

In general, I feel frustrated when companies opt me in to sharing my personal information with them.  In this case, Microsoft only informed me about it in their SLT, which I think some people do not read completely </end_understatement>.
