Opting out of Microsoft Active Protection Service (MAPS) in Microsoft Security Essentials
While I was installing the Microsoft Security Essential Upgrade, the Software License Terms (SLT) window appeared. While I was reading the Microsoft Active Protection Service (MAPS) Participation section of the SLT, I learned Microsoft will be opting-in users by default.

Here is what I did to opt-out of MAPS participation:
In general, I feel frustrated when companies opt me in to sharing my personal information with them. In this case, Microsoft only informed me about it in their SLT, which I think some people do not read completely </end_understatement>.

Here is what I did to opt-out of MAPS participation:
- Open the Microsoft Security Essentials window.
- Click the Settings tab near the top of the window.
- Click the "MAPS" category in the menu on the left.
- Click the "I don't want to join MAPS" radio button in the content area on the right.
- Click the "Save changes" button near the bottom of the window.
- I'm done. Close the Microsoft Security Essentials window.
